Key initiatives and ideas

Updated: Mar 24

As I embark on this journey to serve as your information officer, I would like to share my ideas for maintaining the PFFM as the premier organization in the IAFF.

  1. Clarify job duties.

According to the bylaws, the Information Officer's sole existing responsibility is contract updates, with some updated contracts still pending.  If the information officer role assumes additional duties as specified in the bylaws via action taken by the executive board, ensure it is included in the bylaws to validate the salary.

  2. Enhance the database program we use by allowing searches with parameters relevant to your local area. Search for specific terms within contracts. Also, integrate local department parameters into the database to make them searchable and less time-consuming. This includes minimum staffing, per piece staffing, total number of apparatus, total number of stations, EMT/ambulance service, rank structure, department budget, call volume, etc.

  3. Conduct an annual video conference to ensure contract agreements remain relevant, accurate, and compliant with current standards. This proactive approach mitigates risks from outdated contracts and promotes transparency and accountability. In order to implement this effectively, systematically verify with each local that contracts are current by working with local leaders, addressing potential issues. Offer assistance by directing them to appropriate resources. This process enhances contract management and contributes to the overall success of the database utilized by the PFFM and its membership.

  4. Create a model contract language guide that mirrors the approach utilized by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), specifically tailored for unions operating within the state of Massachusetts. This guide should encompass a wide array of essential contract language that reflects effective practices and successful strategies implemented throughout the state. By incorporating these crucial elements, the guide will serve as a vital resource for local union leaders, equipping them with a robust playbook that details the necessary expertise and insights required for successful contract negotiations.
